Honduran Fire Service, Honduras

With a population of almost 10 million and limited emergency resources, the Honduran state-run fire service is primarily focused on serving its cities. Resources are limited for rural communities and volunteer fire halls.

From 2010 to 2012, Firefighters Without Borders (FWB) partnered with World Vision Canada to provide a train-the-trainer fire response program to the Honduran Fire Service. The program included first aid, vehicle extrication, managing hazardous materials, and general firefighting operations.

After the training was completed, the Honduran Fire Service committed to training 20 additional firefighters for each firefighter trained through the initial program; they also hosted the country’s first National Vehicle Extrication Competition and a learning symposium for firefighters.

As a result, more than 300 firefighters and community volunteers were trained in the key disciplines of safety, rescue, and first aid.
